Dublin Airport Sustainability Strategy 2009

In October 2009 we reached a milestone with the official launch of our first ever Sustainability Strategy for Dublin Airport.  By developing our business in a sustainable manner we are demonstrating how acutely aware we are of the impact the airport has on the environment and our local communities and also the economic benefits it brings to the local and national regions.
For many people sustainability is a buzz word, sounds good but do we really know what it means?   To put it quite simply Dublin Airport’s sustainability vision is:

“To be a responsible airport operator by minimising our impact on the environment and our immediate neighbours, whilst supporting economic growth as Ireland’s busiest airport and making a positive contribution to the society in which we operate”.

The strategy was developed with the aim of consolidating and improving our performance in the key areas of sustainability identified by us and our stakeholders though a number of workshops.  The strategy includes our first set of objectives, targets and KPIs for twelve key sustainability issues for the airport;

  • Aircraft Noise
  • Energy
  • Health & Safety
  • Sustainable Transport
  • Climate Change
  • Air Quality

  • Waste Management
  • Community Relations
  • Water Consumption
  • Surface Water
  • Waste Water
  • Sustainable Construction
  • The Sustainability Strategy forms the basis for managing sustainability within Dublin Airport and we will review and update it annually, specifically the objectives and targets.
As sustainability covers nearly every aspect of airport operations a holistic view of our activities is required.   In this regard, we have established a Sustainability Forum to work collectively to successfully implement and deliver the strategy and to embed the concept of sustainability into our activities and operations.

Publication of Dublin Airport’s 1st Sustainability Report

In November 2009 we published Dublin Airport’s first ever Sustainability Report. The report is designed to provide all our stakeholders with information on what sustainability means for the airport and how we manage it within our business.  We are committed to improving our sustainability performance and reporting our progress year-on-year in our annual sustainability report.
A key aim of the Sustainability Strategy and our commitment to annual sustainability reporting is to strengthen our relationship with stakeholders. We are aware that many of the local communities have issues with the airport and we are always looking for ways to improve our performance. Our Sustainability Strategy and Sustainability Report will – I hope – go a long way towards doing so.
