The Capital Development Programme at Dublin Airport is one of the largest infrastructural programmes in the State and the €1.2 billion construction programme will transform Dublin Airport over the next ten years beginning in 2006. The development programme is in response to the huge growth in both passenger numbers and freight growth at the airport in the last decade.
Passenger numbers are expected to reach 20 million in 2006 and the recent upward trend in demand at Dublin Airport is projected to continue into the future necessitating the development of new facilities to meet this growth. The development programme includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, Terminal 2, two new piers, D and E, and an extension to the existing Pier A.
Other developments include a new ground floor check-in area (Area 14) in Terminal 1 (in addition to several other significant improvements to the terminal). The programme will also involve apron and apron related development, new rapid exit taxiways and aircraft stands. A new road infrastructure and new car parks will also be constructed.
The Dublin Airport Authority's project team is being led by Mark Foley, the DAA's Director, Capital Programmes. The strategic management of the capital development programme is being managed by Turner & Townsend, an internationally recognised firm of project managers.
The UK based construction company Laing O'Rourke will be responsible for the building of Pier D while the highly experienced international consultants, Ove Arup, in conjunction with architects Pascall & Watson, will be responsible for the design of Terminal 2. The development programme will rollout to a carefully scheduled timeline in order to minimise any inconvenience to the day-to-day operations of Dublin Airport.
