About Us

Environment

Our approach is to develop and operate a sustainable business in compliance with regulatory requirements, best management practices, and with sensitivity to local community and public concerns.

The airport supports the economic development and the social needs of society, and to comply with the concept of 'Sustainable Development', it must operate and develop in an environmentally safe way. This involves:

  • mitigating the effects of operations on the local ecological systems and surroundings;
  • improving the environmental performance of all operators and activities on the site;
  • protecting the habitats and amenities in, around and downstream of the airport and preventing pollution.

In order to meet the demands of sustainable development, and to continually improve the protection of the natural environment, we have embarked on an extensive Environment Programme. It is aimed at improving environmental practices and preventing pollution at Dublin Airport and is based on the following environmental issues:

This Environment Programme is achieved with the comprehensive planning of the airport. It is in accordance with recent planning and development legislation, combined with environmental protection legislation in a regional, local and aviation context. We have invested in a comprehensive range of monitoring programmes throughout the airport.  It is only though monitoring the environment that we can work to manage our processes, and measure the effects of activities in the interconnected mediums and phases.

The information is co-ordinated though our Environmental Management System (EMS) which identifies areas for improvement through a 'Plan-Monitor-Do-Check-Review' process.  Our EMS underpins the management of the numerous environmental issues that are likely to arise on a complex site (as large as a town) such as Dublin Airport.

Dublin Airport is a large airport covering approximately two and a half thousand acres of land in north Dublin.  The operation at the airport conveyed 18.4 million passengers in 2005 alone.  Given the complex operations needed to support air travel on such a large site, managing the processes to protect the environment is a challenging undertaking - and the Dublin Airport Authority has risen to meet this challenge and sees it as an opportunity to make significant strides in environmental protection.

Our commitment to protecting the environment and operating in a balanced sustainable way (delivering a needed service in harmony with the environment).

Our aim is to deliver improvements in customer service while achieving improvements in environmental performance - on a local and regional basis.
