The airport covers a significant surface area ranging from undisturbed pastures, managed airfield grasslands, landscaped landside gardens, airfield/apron/carpark pavements, and the built environment – each requiring different management techniques.
Aviation safety is the primary concern in operating Dublin Airport and the issue of bird hazard is managed through a strict grassland management programme. Dangers arising from ingestion of other mammals are addressed though a Wildlife Management Plan. This is being supplemented by a biological survey of the micro-invertebrates along the watercourse systems to identify ecological populations at a lower end of the food chain.
The natural landside environment is made welcoming to passengers and staff
through a seasonal gardening programme (involving colourful planting
arrangements and festive displays) which also includes environmentally conscious
practices (e.g. using environmentally-friendly contact herbicides and garden
composting/mulching). The internal environment is made comfortable and
pleasing with sculptures and art celebrating Irish culture & heritage,
scientific achievements and environmental scenes.
