Record passenger numbers at Dublin Airport during first six months of 2006

2 Million Passengers in June

Almost 10 million passengers travelled through Dublin Airport during the first six months of the year, a 15% increase over the same period last year according to figures released by the Dublin Airport Authority.

This increase in passenger volumes represents an additional 1.3 million passengers travelling through the airport in just six months.

Dublin Airport reached a significant milestone in June with over 2 million passengers catered for in this month alone.   This trend is expected to continue in July, August and September.

European traffic recorded the strongest growth during this period rising  by an impressive 25% to over 4.4 million passengers.   The increase in this market was supported by the launch of over 30 new routes and services into mainland Europe since the beginning of the year.

The Transatlantic market recorded a 7% increase for the first six months of the year with over 586,000 passengers travelling to and from North America.

Passenger volumes to and from the UK grew by 6% to more than 4.2 million passengers while domestic traffic also performed well recording over 380,000 passengers, a 23% increase over the same period last year.

In all, 38 new routes/services were launched since the beginning of the year.

Commenting on the latest traffic figures, Director of Dublin Airport Robert Hilliard said “During the first six months of the year Dublin Airport has already exceeded the total additional growth in passenger traffic for 2005 and our traffic forecasts indicate that end of year passenger figures will surpass 21 million.

Catering for this phenomenal growth in passenger traffic with no extra terminal capacity is a real challenge for the Airport.   In this regard a number of short-term initiatives have taken place in the terminal building and elsewhere, such as the removal of non essential services from the Departures Floor to improve the overall flow of passengers in the terminal building and the addition of 8 new temporary boarding gates” added Mr. Hilliard.

“The main focus now is on gaining more capacity in the medium-term with a new Check-In Area 14, providing 24 additional check-in desks, due for completion in December and Pier D, comprising 14 boarding gates, due for completion in October 2007.   Our longer-term capacity needs will only be achieved through the delivery of the second terminal and a planning application for T2 will be submitted to the local planning authority before the end of the summer,” concluded Mr. Hilliard.
