Dublin Airport Authority chief executive Declan Collier today (October 25th 2006) welcomed the decision of Fingal County Council to approve the plans for the new second terminal at Dublin Airport.
“We are delighted that our plans to transform Dublin Airport have cleared the first hurdle in the planning process,” Mr Collier said. “We will now study the decision in detail before making any further comment on the specifics of the planning permission that has been received.”
The DAA had sought permission to construct a new 75,000 sq metre passenger terminal, T2, close to the roundabout on the existing approach road to Terminal One. Permission was also sought for a new 24,000 sq meter pier building, Pier E with up to 20 new aircraft boarding stands.
Construction of T2 is due to begin the second quarter of next year, subject to planning, and the new terminal will open in the autumn of 2009.
“The planning process in Ireland is a democratic one and stakeholders are entitled to their views on infrastructure development. But we hope that if there are appeals to this decision, the appeal process moves ahead as swiftly as possible in the interests of all the users of Dublin Airport,” Mr. Collier added.
“T2 is a critical part of Ireland’s transport infrastructure and the DAA is working to an extremely tight timeline to deliver the new capacity that Dublin Airport so badly needs.”
The design of T2 is such that the terminal can be extended in the future to 90,000 sq metres and permission has now been granted for that potential second phase. The planning permission also paves the way for an improved internal road network, a major utilities upgrade and a range of other associated works at Dublin Airport.
The total cost of the entire T2 programme at current prices is just over €600m, while the terminal itself will cost just under €400m. As part of the plan for T2, the internal roads at Dublin Airport will be upgraded and reconfigured to create separate dedicated approach routes for T1 and T2. Locations for a future metro station and a ground transportation centre are also provided for in the Dublin Airport development plan.
The plans for T2, Pier E and a host of other associated airport upgrades were submitted to Fingal County Council in late August. The plans were developed following extensive consultation with airlines and ground handlers and associated costs and specifications were independently verified by cost consultants, reporting to the Government.
“The passengers, the Government, the business and tourism communities and the vast majority of our airline customers all want this new terminal. The DAA is ready to deliver it by 2009,” Declan Collier said.
