Over 5 million passengers in first quarter
Passenger throughput at Dublin Airport exceeded 1.9 million in March, a 9% increase over the same month last year according to the Dublin Airport Authority.
This growth in passenger numbers represented an extra 168,000 passengers or an average of over 5,000 ADDITIONAL passengers every day during the month of March alone. Growth during the month was boosted with two bank holiday weekends in quick succession as Easter fell in March compared with April last year.
Passenger volumes to/from continental Europe rose by 8% with more than 930,000 passengers travelling to European destinations last month.
UK traffic grew by over 6% with more than 780,000 passengers travelling this route sector.
The number of passengers travelling on domestic routes fell by 4% to over 71,000 passengers while passenger volumes to/from North America grew by an impressive 43% with over 140,000 passengers travelling State side in March.
Other international passenger traffic to the Middle-East (Dubai and Abu Dhabi), Northern Africa (Sharm El Sheik) and South Africa(Capetown) rose by 44% with more than 27,000 passengers travelling to those destinations.
Passenger traffic increased by 8% during the first quarter of 2008. In all just over 5 million passengers travelled through Dublin Airport in the first three months of the year.
