At The Airport

Almost 1.2 million passengers travelled through Dublin Airport in April

Almost 1.2 million passengers used Dublin Airport in April, a near 32% decline on the same period last year, according to the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

The closure of Irish airspace for almost seven days and the phased resumption of business over the following two days due to volcanic ash had a severe impact on traffic during the month. Closures and restrictions in other European countries also contributed to reduced passenger numbers at Dublin Airport in April.

Passenger volumes to and from continental Europe fell by almost 30% as 620,000 passengers traveled to European destinations. UK traffic recorded a 34% decrease with 425,000 passengers travelling in April.

The number of passengers on domestic routes declined by 55% with almost 27,000 passengers taking domestic flights last month.  Transatlantic traffic fell by 30% with just over 98,000 passengers travelling on the North American sector in April.

Other international passenger traffic, which covers flights to the Middle East, decreased by 9% as almost 20,000 passengers travelled on this route sector in April. Year to-date more than 5 million passengers have used Dublin Airport, a 19% decline on the same period last year.
