Almost 1.2 million passengers used Dublin Airport in April, a near 32%
decline on the same period last year, according to the Dublin Airport Authority
(DAA).
The closure of Irish airspace for almost seven days and the
phased resumption of business over the following two days due to volcanic ash
had a severe impact on traffic during the month. Closures and restrictions in
other European countries also contributed to reduced passenger numbers at Dublin
Airport in April.
Passenger volumes to and from continental Europe fell by almost 30% as
620,000 passengers traveled to European destinations. UK traffic recorded a 34%
decrease with 425,000 passengers travelling in April.
The number of
passengers on domestic routes declined by 55% with almost 27,000 passengers
taking domestic flights last month. Transatlantic traffic fell by 30% with
just over 98,000 passengers travelling on the North American sector in
April.
Other international passenger traffic, which covers flights
to the Middle East, decreased by 9% as almost 20,000 passengers travelled on
this route sector in April. Year to-date more than 5 million passengers have
used Dublin Airport, a 19% decline on the same period last year.
