Terminal 2 At Dublin Airport

November 19, 2010 saw the opening of the new Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport. The terminal and pier are at the centre piece of a five-year investment programme to expand, improve and upgrade Dublin Airport. This part of the project began in October 2007 and cost a total of €609 million.

The terminal itself is a 75,000 sq metre building and is the home of Aer Lingus, Etihad Airways, American Airlines, Continental (United) Airlines, Delta Air Lines and US Airways. The terminal can handle 15 million passengers per year. There are 56 check-in desks and 18 passenger screening units.

Terminal 2 is also linked to Terminal 1 via link bridges both on the airside and landside to ensure easy and efficient passenger flows.

Stretching almost 400 metres on to the airfield from the rear of the terminal building is T2’s boarding gate facility. Covering 25,000 square metres, this is a sizeable structure in its own right and accommodates 19 new boarding gates and airbridges. Up to half of these can be used by long-haul, wide-bodied aircraft.

The pier also contains Dublin Airport’s US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility. Unique in Europe to Dublin and Shannon Airports, CBP will enable departing passengers to clear all US entry requirements including customs, immigration and agriculture controls.

This allows airlines use a wider range of airports in the US and use less expensive domestic terminals for arrivals.
