Previously unseen photographs of The Rolling Stones from 1965, some of which were taken at Dublin Airport, will go on public display at the airport in November.
The black and white photographs, which were taken in September 1965, show the band arriving at Dublin Airport, performing and backstage at the Adelphi Cinema on Dublin’s Middle Abbey Street, and at Connolly Station en route to Belfast.
The Irish tour took place in early September 1965, just a few weeks after (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction topped the charts and featured the original Rolling Stones line up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones and Bill Wyman.
The 14 unseen Stones photos were recently discovered when the Irish Photo Archive was being catalogued. The archive has more than 30 images of the Rolling Stones in Dublin, including several taken on their arrival at Dublin Airport. It contains more than two million photos, including many other celebrity photos that have never been previously published.
The two photographers who captured the Stones in Ireland - Padraig MacBrian and Andy Farren – owned the Lensmen Photographic Agency at the time. The two men are both in their 90s and still live in Dublin. Lensman’s current owner Susan Kennedy said the Rolling Stones pictures had been among millions of negatives orderly filed away for decades."It's been a long tortuous process to get these photographs," Kennedy said. "But they are a great find.”
The black and white images of The Rolling Stones will be on display at Terminal 1 in Dublin Airport from November. “These photos are part of the social history of Dublin and are also fantastic images of a band on the cusp of global stardom,” said Dublin Airport Authority Public Affairs Director, Paul O’Kane. “We’re delighted to be able to exhibit them in the Mezzanine area of Terminal 1.”
The Lensman photographs will also feature in a 42-page collector's edition hardback book being produced to coincide with the release of the movie The Rolling Stones Charlie is My Darling - Ireland 1965 which tells the story of the band's two-day Irish tour. The Rolling Stones images are also online at the Irish Photo Archive.
