Dublin Airport celebrated reaching 40,000 followers on Twitter this week by distributing Twitter themed cupcakes to passengers.

Dublin Airport is the sixth largest airport in the world on Twitter, and has a larger Twitter following that major global hubs such as Amsterdam Schiphol, Charles de Gaulle in Paris or Frankfurt Airport.

“We’re delighted to have reached another Twitter milestone and wanted to share it with our customers and followers,” said Dublin Airport Authority Public Affairs Director, Paul O’Kane.

Dublin Airport has been active on Twitter for less than three years and uses the micro-blogging site for passenger information, news, customer engagement and customer service queries. “Twitter is an excellent tool that allows us to communicate directly with our customers and to share information of interest to them,” O’Kane added.

Dublin Airport’s Twitter feed was named the world’s Best Airport Twitter Feed at last year’s Moodies awards for social media in the aviation sector. The judges said Dublin’s Airport’s Twitter account was “in a league of its own” with a “strong sense of place” and “its own distinct voice.”
